Portrait Photography

Portrait Photography can often be rigid and lifeless. I see far too many portraits that look plastic and forced. Personally I like to have the subject very relaxed and content with themselves. To achieve this I like to photograph people in their natural environments or in the outdoors. If a person is relaxed while being photographed, they are more likely to reveal their true nature. As a result the portrait is much more genuine and satisfying.

Photographing a portrait should also take time. I Usually find that it takes a few poses and settings before a nonprofessional model will be truly comfortable with themselves in front of a camera. Often the best shots on a roll of film are at the end. I don't place time as a deciding factor when it comes to taking a proper portrait photograph of someone.
